Organized by Wildlife Preservation Canada Native Pollinator Initiative
Wildlife Preservation Canada needs your help to survey for at-risk bumble bees at Pinery Provincial Park this summer! Come join our volunteer training workshop to learn how to collect valuable data to help conserve these important pollinators.
The training workshop is held across two separate days. A virtual session will occur on Wednesday June 10th from 7-8pm, covering background info about bumble bees, WPC's work with them, and the Pinery Bumble Bee Community Science Program. Registerees will receive a Zoom link to the virtual session one week in advance.
This registration form is for both components. Attending the virtual component isn't mandatory, but is highly encouraged. However, to complete your own surveys, you MUST attend the in-person component.
The in-person component will be held on Sunday, June 21st and will follow this structure:
10:30am - 12:00pm: An indoor portion within the Visitor Centre, where a presentation delivered by WPC staff will teach bumble bee identification, survey protocols, and all duties performed by program volunteers.
12:00 - 12:45pm: Lunch
12:45 - 3:00pm: An outdoor portion where we will teach you how to survey for bumble bees, including catching them in nets and transferring them to vials for identification and data recording. This is essentially a practice survey alongside WPC staff. Please wear appropriate attire for the outdoor portion!
Things to bring:
Known allergies to bee stings? Any questions? Let us know at pollinators@wildlifepreservation.ca.
Please note that we appreciate all interest in our program, but the training workshop is intended for those who want to return to Pinery to conduct independent surveys.
